Poetry as Diplomacy: Building Bridges Through Language and Culture
Trade Builds Economies. Culture Builds Understanding.
Successful international relationships are built on more than trade agreements.
They are built on trust.
Trust grows through understanding.
Understanding often begins with culture.
That is why cultural diplomacy remains one of the most powerful tools available to diplomats, communities and institutions seeking to build lasting international partnerships.
On 9 June 2026, I had the privilege of attending “Aplauze pentru Poet”, a remarkable cultural event organised by the Consulate General of Romania in Manchester.
The evening demonstrated how literature, music and language continue to unite communities far beyond national borders.
As Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in Manchester, responsible for the North West of England, I left the event convinced that cultural diplomacy plays an essential role in strengthening not only communities, but also international cooperation.
Poetry Has No Borders
The performance brought together acclaimed actress Emilia Popescu and pianist Cătălin Răducanu in an inspiring celebration of Romanian poetry and live music.
Through the words of Mihai Eminescu, Lucian Blaga, Nichita Stănescu and Marin Sorescu, the audience experienced something far greater than a cultural performance.
We experienced a shared identity.
Although many attendees have built successful lives in the United Kingdom, the poetry reminded us that language continues to connect us with our heritage, our families and our traditions.
Culture has a remarkable ability to overcome distance.
It brings people together.
It creates dialogue.
It reminds us where we come from while helping us build our future.
The Romanian Language Connects Communities
For citizens of both the Republic of Moldova and Romania living in the United Kingdom, the Romanian language represents much more than a means of communication.
It carries history.
It preserves traditions.
It reflects shared cultural values.
Most importantly, it creates a bridge between generations.
Young people born or raised in Britain can continue to discover the richness of their cultural heritage through literature, music and the arts.
At the same time, older generations remain connected to the traditions that shaped them.
Language therefore becomes one of the strongest foundations of community cohesion.
Leadership Through Cultural Diplomacy
The event was opened by Nicoleta Teodorovici, Consul General of Romania in Manchester and President of the Manchester Consular Association.
Her remarks highlighted the importance of initiatives that promote the Romanian language, preserve national cultural heritage and inspire future generations.
I have been privileged to witness her continued commitment to cultural diplomacy.
Through events such as this, the Consulate General consistently demonstrates that diplomacy is not limited to official meetings.
It also means creating opportunities for communities to come together, celebrate shared values and strengthen mutual understanding.
This form of leadership deserves recognition.
Why Cultural Diplomacy Matters
Business relationships rarely begin with contracts.
They begin with trust.
Academic partnerships begin with understanding.
Diplomatic cooperation begins with dialogue.
Culture supports each of these.
When people understand one another’s language, traditions and history, collaboration becomes easier.
Consequently, cultural diplomacy complements economic diplomacy.
Together, they strengthen international partnerships and create an environment in which trade, investment, education and innovation can flourish.
Strengthening Moldova–Romania Relations
For the Republic of Moldova, cultural diplomacy has particular significance.
The Republic of Moldova and Romania share deep historical, linguistic and cultural connections.
Events celebrating our shared language and literary heritage reinforce these bonds while creating opportunities for closer cooperation between institutions, communities and citizens.
They also demonstrate the valuable contribution that both countries make to the multicultural fabric of the United Kingdom.
Supporting Moldova’s European Future
Shared cultural heritage also reinforces the values that underpin the Republic of Moldova’s European future.
European cooperation is built upon respect for cultural diversity, democratic values and mutual understanding.
Every cultural initiative that brings people together contributes to these broader objectives.
By promoting our language, literature and traditions, we strengthen Moldova’s international profile while demonstrating confidence in our identity as a European nation.
Greater Manchester as a Centre for International Dialogue
Greater Manchester continues to demonstrate why it is one of the United Kingdom’s leading international cities.
Its diplomatic community, universities, businesses and cultural institutions create opportunities for dialogue that extend well beyond commerce.
As Honorary Consul, I believe these relationships will continue to strengthen cooperation between the Republic of Moldova, Romania and the United Kingdom across culture, education, business and public life.
Each initiative brings us one step closer to stronger partnerships and greater mutual understanding.
Looking Ahead
As I reflected on the evening, one message remained with me.
Trade builds economies.
Diplomacy builds partnerships.
Culture builds understanding.
Together, they create lasting international relationships.
I look forward to continuing to support initiatives that strengthen cultural dialogue, promote the Romanian language, celebrate our shared heritage and contribute to even closer relations between the Republic of Moldova, Romania and the United Kingdom.
